Rusty Nail

We Think: The Rusty Nail is more of an optional loop of Golden Spike than it’s own trail but we’ll go ahead and call it a trail.  This relatively new road  is a great alternative to the bumpy and sometimes annoyingly-rough Gold Bar Rim section of Golden Spike.  The Nail is also not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of heights.  It has a cliffhanging section that, although pretty safe, looks like you could fall off of a several hundred foot cliff at any minute.  There is a 100 yard section right after that that is an off camber lean to the cliff side that you’ll want to pay close attention to while navigating it.  You can breathe a sigh of relief once you touch down on the hard, flat rock and join back up with he Golden Spike trail which ends up very close to the Golden Crack.  Check out a map of this area here.
